This is a vintage Makonde African, carved wood, tree of life lamp. A rare example of folk art and a fabulous table light with a decoupaged reed print shade.
This is a stunning piece and the detail in the carving will fascinate and amaze you, your family and your friends.
A bit of background-
This vintage wooden lamp dates from the 1940’s 1950’s and originates from the African Makonde people. When found this was very neglected and had been badly glued with broken securing screws. The lamp has been taken apart and sympathetically cleaned before being securely reassembled.
Carved from a single piece of ebony and depicting 15 figures carrying out different chores this style is known as “THE TREE OF LIFE”. In excellent condition it has been thoroughly cleaned and buffed using a brush before being rewired. Fitted with a new E14 ses bulb holder and mounting plate together with an inline switch it is finished with a decoupaged Lampshade with thatched reed design and LED bulb which are included.
The Makonde lived in comparative isolation in the savannah highlands prior to the 1970s. They are an ethnic group in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique. They traditionally create African wood carvings, household objects, figures and masks and Makonde art has become part of the most important art of Africa today.
Artists use their tribal myths and fables as a source of inspiration for their breathtaking work.
